This species is found in various tropical areas: Africa, Indian Ocean Islands, China (Yunnan) ... This "cultivar" of the Indian Ocean from Madagascar, contains various monoterpenols and esters, sesquiterpénols, of sequiterpènes, of aldehydes, ketones ... The rose note is less marked than in the Egyptian cultivar. The Bourbon geranium has the most complex biochemistry and a more varied palette of shades.

In Indian symbolism, geranium will be assimilated to the heart chakra. The essential oil is heart note in perfumery.
